Preguntas Frecuentes sobre itsme®
What is itsme®?
itsme® is an initiative of Belgian Mobile ID, a consortium of leading Belgian banks (Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING, and KBC) and mobile network operators (Orange, Proximus, and Telenet).
The itsme® app offers all Belgian citizens the unique opportunity to get a mobile ID on their smartphone. This allows them to identify themselves online and to conduct digital transactions in a highly secure way. The app replaces the laundry list of passwords, user names, tokens, and card readers with an intuitive application to access a wide range of online services. And thanks to multi-factor technology and data encryption, itsme® offers the highest level of security.

How many people use itsme®?
- Currently, 6.7 million Belgians are using the itsme® app.
- In total, Belgians performed 315 million actions with the itsme® app last year (2022). This averages to 47 actions per person per year, almost 1 per week. (source: https://www.itsme-id.com)
How does identification work with itsme®?
Getting started with itsme® is easy. Every Belgian citizen over age 16 with a bank account at one of Belgium’s major banks, or anyone with a Belgian Identity Card (eID) over age 18, can create a itsme® account. Once the app is installed on a smartphone, it can be used for all government applications, at banks and several other online services.
Use itsme® the same each time: initiate an action (e.g., a login) at a company, receive a notification in the itsme® app, and confirm with the personal code or a Fingerprint or FaceID.
How does signing with itsme® work?
itsme® Sign is a fully qualified mobile signature and can be handled on-the-go with your mobile device, without needing to use a card reader.
For qualified electronic signatures, a personal certificate is generated when a signer first uses itsme®. This certificate is unique to the individual and remains exclusively theirs for future use. If the signing process carries significant risk, itsme® Sign is the preferred choice because it offers a qualified signature with non-repudiation.
The signing method is available in the Nitro Sign eSignatures solution via API or within the standalone Cloud platform. This way Nitro Sign allows you to sign your documents via your smartphone in a qualified way.
What are the advantages of itsme®?
itsme® is built on three core pillars:
1. User-Friendliness: With just one app, users can log in, sign documents, and securely share personal details. Whether identifying yourself online, accessing websites and platforms, confirming digital transactions, or signing documents, itsme® makes it seamless—all from your mobile phone.
2. Security: itsme® upholds the highest security standards through multi-factor authentication and additional protective layers. All data is fully encrypted, both in transit and at rest, ensuring that unauthorized access is never possible.
3. Privacy Protection: Your consent is always required—nothing happens without it. Every itsme® user knows exactly what personal data they are sharing and with whom. Furthermore, all data is securely stored in a highly protected Data Center in Belgium and never leaves the EU.
Is digital identification and signing with itsme® legally binding?
The answer is yes! The itsme® app is certified for eIDAS (EU electronic ID standards) and can be used to meet PSD2 (EU open banking regulation) and GDPR (EU privacy protection) requirements.
Moreover, itsme® sign is a qualified electronic signature method according to eIDAS, which is the variant for signing that provides the most guarantees. In legal terms, it is the equivalent of a manuscript signature, and the burden of proof lies with the party that initiated the signature.
With itsme®, each signature is uniquely linked to the signatory, who has sole control over the process. This is ensured by requiring physical possession of the mobile device where the app is installed, along with authentication via fingerprint or PIN code.
